I would transplant this tree to a larger container so you don't end up with a tree that is root bound. To increase branching, you can cut the tips of the lateral branches and cut the tip of the tree at an acceptable height. The best way for you is to first transplant, wait for a while for the tree to recuperate and then do the tipping. It is best to tip the main branch to a lateral branch so you reduce apical dominance and if new shoots grow after you remove the top you need to remove them with your finger when they are still small and soft 1-2 cm otherwise they will grow fast and you will need to go through the process again.
